Bearded Dragon

Pogona vitticeps

We purchased our bearded dragons from several US breeders. The problem we were faced with was the fact that they did not handle cold as well in winter as we would like it. We are always striving to get hardy species, that can be kept outdoors without using electricity. That is better for the environment and saves us money too. Therefore we needed many years to select out all the hardy ones, that survived winters in my unheated, but dry outdoor greenhouses. We also selected out for color, dodging inbreeding, and selected for red and orange colors. Further on the Sandfire region is situated in South Australia, where winters are cooler. The animals we have now all hibernate outdoors and all breed in May-June-July. They lay 3 clutches of 25-30 eggs per female. That is much, but we offer them plenty of food.

Our bearded dragons prefer to eat deadheadroaches, of which we breed millions. As a secons choice they like superworms. Besides that we feed them vegetable leaves several times a week. The babies eat the same items, but smaller sized. For the babies I also breed many termites in piles of cardboard-boxes laying in the forest. For the baies we also attract the numerous "summer" flies to the terraria with pieces of fruit. In the terraria, where we raise the babies we also grow dandelion. cichory and platain, mainly for a source of water: They have dew on them in the morning. But also they can be used as a constant supply of vegetarian food for the babies.

Raising the babies is a concern for us, as they are solitary animals and do not like company. In a 100 sq feet terrarium, in which we can raise 200 baby Australian waterdragons easily, we can only have up till 40 baby bearded dragons.

Bearded dragons are rather sensitive for parasites like nematodes, coccidia, bacteria and flagellates. They do not show any illness problems untill they are very sick most of the time. Therefore they need to be monitored more closely and also treated preventively for nematodes etc.

Bearded dragons like to sit on high points. Therefore the terraria of the adults have some trunks and branches, and the terraria of the babies have twigs. The animals like to perch on them. The terraria are outdoors, but made in such a way that they get plenty of sunshine and that they also have areas where no rain can fall; where it is always dry. They do not like too much moisture. Occasional misting they like, however.
